Many young players focus on flashy elements of the game – dribbling, shooting, or tricks. Meanwhile, accurate passing and confident first touch are the foundation of every effective performance. Professional players perform hundreds of repetitions each week to achieve automatic, confident execution. This article will show you how to build your own daily technical routine that will significantly improve your match performance.
WHY PASSING AND BALL CONTROL ARE ESSENTIAL
-
80% of ball contacts are passes and first touches – not dribbles or shots
-
A poor first touch wastes time, increases the risk of losing possession, and breaks the rhythm of the action
-
An inaccurate pass takes a teammate out of the game and kills tempo
-
Coaches and scouts highly value players who can keep possession and make quick decisions
DAILY TECHNICAL ROUTINE (20–30 MINUTES)
The plan below can be done daily. You don’t need a field – just a ball, a wall, and your commitment.
-
WALL PASSES AND FIRST TOUCH (10 MINUTES)
Goal: develop automatic first touch and precise passing
Instructions:
-
Stand 3–4 meters from a wall, play the ball with one or two touches
-
Sets:
– right foot, inside of the foot (20x)
– left foot, inside of the foot (20x)
– sole control, pass with opposite foot (20x)
– outside foot control, quick turn, pass (20x) -
Change tempo, body positioning, and angle of play
-
TURNING CONTROL (5 MINUTES)
Goal: develop awareness and directional control – "open body position"
Exercise:
-
Stand sideways to the wall, receive the ball as if turning into space
-
Control with the inside of the foot and turn 90° or 180°
-
Add speed and imagine a defender behind you
-
LONGER PASSES (5 MINUTES)
Goal: control power, direction, and trajectory
How to train:
-
Place a target (e.g. backpack, bottle) 8–10 meters away
-
Play 10 passes with the right and 10 with the left foot – reduce margin of error over time
-
Aim at a specific point, not just "close enough"
-
INTENSITY SERIES (5 MINUTES)
Goal: simulate fatigue and real-game tempo
Exercise:
-
30 seconds fast wall passes, alternating feet
-
30 seconds juggling + immediate pass
-
Repeat 5 rounds – no break in motion
-
BONUS – IF YOU HAVE A PARTNER
-
Play 1–2 touch in motion, vary distance
-
Add cognitive tasks: call-driven passes, last-second direction changes, color signals (e.g. red = left foot)
HOW TO TRACK YOUR PROGRESS
-
Record your sessions – check if your passes are fluid and your technique is clean
-
Increase pace – shorten time between touches, count passes per minute
-
Test in matches – does your control give you more time? Are you confident under pressure?
SUMMARY
Confident first touch + accurate passing = the foundation of every professional
You don’t need perfect conditions – you need consistency. Just 20–30 minutes a day of focused technical training can transform your performance. When technique becomes automatic, you gain time, calmness, and an edge on the pitch.
