Jay DeMerit was not a young superstar.
He wasn’t in an elite academy.
He didn’t have agents calling him.
After finishing college football in the United States (University of Illinois–Chicago), no MLS teams offered him a contract.
No trials. No interest. No chances.
Most players would give up.
Jay didn’t.
He decided to risk everything — leave his country and chase his dream in Europe.
RISK STARTS WITH A DECISION
He took all the money he had — 1,800 dollars — and bought a one-way plane ticket to England.
No plan.
No trial arranged.
No football connections.
He didn’t even have a place to stay.
For months, he lived in the attic of a friend’s house — barely surviving, eating whatever he could afford.
Sometimes he didn’t even have money for food.
But he kept going.
Because if you want to win big — sometimes you must be willing to lose everything.
FROM SUNDAY LEAGUES TO SEMI-PRO FOOTBALL
Jay started at the very bottom.

SOUTHALL FC – a tiny club in the ninth tier of English football.
No salaries. Just mud, cold, and passion. -
NORTHWOOD FC – one tier higher, in the Isthmian Premier League (semi-professional level).
He trained every day like he was already a professional.
Your level doesn’t come from where you play — it comes from how you work.
THE GAME THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING
Northwood were invited to play a friendly match against a Championship club…
WATFORD FC.
Jay was a nobody.
Watford were preparing for their season.
But in that match, Jay played like his life depended on every ball — because it did.
He dominated defensively.
After the game, Watford coaches called him.
“Come for a trial.”
He earned a professional contract.
Not because of luck…
But because he was ready when the opportunity finally appeared.
FROM UNKNOWN TO PREMIER LEAGUE
At Watford, he became a starter.
Then something happened that changed his life.
In 2006, in the Championship playoff final — the match worth millions — Jay scored the opening goal at Wembley.
Watford won.
They were promoted to the Premier League.
From a Sunday league pitch
→ to scoring at Wembley
→ to the biggest league in the world.
All because he took a risk.
REPRESENTING THE UNITED STATES – WORLD CUP
After establishing himself at Watford, Jay DeMerit was called up to the United States national team.
In 2010, he played at the World Cup in South Africa.
From sleeping in an attic
