3 THINGS EVERY PLAYER SHOULD IMPROVE FOR THEIR POSITION

If you want to become a professional footballer, working hard is not enough.

You need to understand what makes a player effective in YOUR position.

A goalkeeper should not train like a winger.

A centre-back needs different qualities than a number 10.

Here are three things to focus on for every position.

GOALKEEPER

  1. IMPROVE YOUR DISTRIBUTION

Modern goalkeepers start attacks.

Practice short passes under pressure and accurate longer balls with both feet.

  1. COMMAND YOUR AREA

Don't wait silently on your line.

Communicate.

Organize defenders.

Attack crosses decisively.

  1. MASTER YOUR POSITIONING

Spectacular saves look great.

Good positioning can make difficult saves look simple.

Study where you stand before the shot arrives.

CENTRE-BACK

  1. SCAN BEFORE RECEIVING

Know where the striker and your passing options are before you get the ball.

It gives you valuable extra time.

  1. DEFEND FORWARD

Don't constantly retreat.

Recognize when you can step out, intercept or win the duel before your opponent turns.

  1. BECOME RELIABLE WITH THE BALL

You don't need incredible tricks.

First touch.

Simple passing.

Composure under pressure.

Coaches need defenders they can trust.

FULL-BACK / WING-BACK

  1. MASTER 1V1 DEFENDING

Control the distance.

Watch your opponent's body.

Don't dive into tackles unnecessarily.

Make yourself difficult to beat.

  1. IMPROVE YOUR FINAL BALL

Crosses and cutbacks can separate an average full-back from a dangerous one.

Practice them repeatedly from realistic positions.

  1. LEARN WHEN TO ATTACK

Don't run forward automatically.

Recognize when to overlap, underlap or stay behind and protect your team.

DEFENSIVE MIDFIELDER – 6

  1. SCAN CONSTANTLY

Look around before receiving.

You often play in the most pressured area of the pitch.

Information gives you time.

  1. PLAY FORWARD WHEN POSSIBLE

Don't become a player who only passes sideways.

Recognize opportunities to break lines.

  1. PROTECT THE CENTRE

Your value isn't measured only by tackles.

Position yourself so dangerous passes cannot happen in the first place.

CENTRAL MIDFIELDER – 8

  1. BECOME AVAILABLE EVERYWHERE

Move after passing.

Create angles.

Support attacks and defence.

Make teammates feel like they always have an option.

  1. CONTROL THE TEMPO

Not every action needs to be fast.

Learn when to accelerate play and when your team needs control.

  1. ADD GOALS AND ASSISTS

Arrive late in the box.

Shoot when space opens.

Play the final pass.

Become a midfielder who changes matches.

ATTACKING MIDFIELDER – 10

  1. RECEIVE BETWEEN THE LINES

Find spaces where defenders and midfielders struggle to decide who should follow you.

  1. TURN FASTER

Scan before receiving.

Improve your first touch.

If you need three seconds to turn, the opportunity may already be gone.

  1. CREATE SOMETHING

A number 10 must influence attacks.

Through balls.

Combinations.

Shots.

Assists.

Don't only look technically good.

Be dangerous.

WINGER

  1. BECOME DANGEROUS 1V1

Develop one or two moves you can execute at full speed.

You don't need 20 tricks.

You need something that actually beats defenders.

  1. ATTACK SPACE WITHOUT THE BALL

Don't always ask for the ball to your feet.

Run behind defenders.

Attack the back post.

Become unpredictable.

  1. PRODUCE NUMBERS

Goals.

Assists.

Chances created.

Good dribbling means little if nothing happens afterwards.

STRIKER – 9

  1. MASTER MOVEMENT IN THE BOX

Near post.

Far post.

Movement behind the defender.

Dropping away before attacking space.

One intelligent movement can create a goal.

  1. FINISH QUICKLY

Professional defenders won't give you five touches.

Practice finishing with both feet and from different angles with minimal preparation.

  1. BECOME USEFUL WITHOUT SCORING

Press.

Hold the ball.

Create space.

Win duels.

Assist teammates.

When you don't score, give the coach another reason to keep you on the pitch.

FINAL MESSAGE

Don't try to improve everything at once.

Understand your position.

Choose one of these three areas.

Work on it for the next few weeks.

Record your matches.

Check whether the improvement appears in real competition.

Then attack the next one.

If you want coaches and scouts to notice you, don't simply try to look talented.

BECOME EXTREMELY EFFECTIVE AT YOUR POSITION.

Make your goalkeeper feel safe.

Make your defenders trust you.

Make your midfield better.

Create chances.

Score goals.

Solve problems for your team.

The higher you want to play, the more useful you need to become.
